Overview

Every year thousands of students from across the world make their way to Spain to attend one of the 74 universities located in the country. They come to the country for many reasons, all understanding that studying in the country is a truly enlightening experience that leaves you filled with new attitudes and concepts about life. Spain is rich in history and culture, and provides the total package for anyone coming to the area from international lands. Here we will examine some of the many reasons that people choose Spain as their education destination.

Spanish universities cover close to all subject areas offered by the Spanish official degrees recognized by the Ministry of Education as well as a very wide range of specific degrees in a large number of professional areas. Most of the university are supported by state funding. A sum of 24 Spanish universities are private, of which 7 are affiliated with the Catholic Church. According to the Europe Higher Education Area (EHEA) the university studies in Spain are grouped into three different degree levels: Grade degrees (undergraduate studies), University Master degrees (graduate studies) and Doctoral degrees (postgraduate studies).

  • Undergraduate degree studies, which lead to the award of a degree, are organized in the following areas and sub-areas: Arts and Humanities, Sciences, Health Sciences, Social Sciences and Law, Engineering and Architecture. These studies require a total of 240 credits for obtaining a grade degree with an avarage duration of three or four academic years.
  • Graduate studies leading to the award of University Masters degrees: These studies require between 60 and 120 credits for obtaining a Masters degree and consist of one to two academic years of study. They also require the public defense of a thesis between 6 and 30 credits.
  • Postgraduate studies leading to the award of a Doctoral degree: To obtain the doctoral qualification a Masters degree is required. The doctoral studies are divided into two phases. The first consists of 60 credits of theoretical study and the second is research-based. It requires the public defense of a doctoral thesis as an original research work in a particular field. There are no time limits for completing doctoral programs but they usually require three to four academic years of study and research.

It may not be your intended reason for coming to Spain, however there isn’t a question that you will learn a great deal of the Spanish language while you are studying, and a beautiful language it is! Spanish is the second most commonly spoken language in the world, just behind English. Imagine how fun it will be to learn a new language…and there is no better way to learn that language than while you are among those who speak it frequently. As you attend university in Spain you will be around those speaking the language so before you know it you will also be speaking it naturally.

Wonderful Climate

Spain has four seasons, with each of those seasons providing delightful weather. The average temperature in the winter is 59 degrees, a most comfortable and enjoyable temperature. In the summer the average temperature is 70 degrees, also pleasant. The climate in which you will be treated to while in Spain will slightly differ depending upon your location in the country.

Affordable Cost of Living

The costs of living in Spain are very affordable when compared to other countries in Europe. This is always important, especially to a college student already strapped for cash. No matter where you live in Spain you can make it an affordable venture but when you are careful in your selections you can ensure this even more so.

Cost of Living

The costs of living in Spain might be vary depends on where you live and the lifestyle that you want to lead. As a student you are probably wanting to live as affordable as possible and bear in mind that prices are higher than average in large cities especially in city centres.

Although the average monthly expenses of a student are about €900-€1,000, prices (especially housing) vary quite a lot depending on the place you choose. According to a recent survey by Eurostudent, the cost of housing in Spain usually accounts for 40% of students’ budgets, and transport takes up 7%.

Coffee: €1.25
A full breakfast: €2-4.
Soft drink or beer: €2.
Loaf of bread: €0.70.
A set menu in a normal restaurant: €10-15.
A single ticket for the bus or underground: €1.35.
10-ride pass: €9.
Monthly pass : €40.
Newspaper: €1.20 (more expensive on Sundays)
Cinema ticket: €7.
Internet connection: €40 a month, approx.
